The WMI Code Creator

The WMI Code Creator has been one of those tools that I rely on often when writing code, whether it be in Perl, Delphi, C#, VBScript, or C++. Windows Management Instrumentation, or WMI, provides an easy to use interface to the underlying Windows operating system. To put it very simply, it is a very easy to use “wrapper” for retrieving information information from the operating system.

WMI also exposes a collection of COM-scriptable objects that allow many programming and scripting languages easy access to it.

But enough about WMI, we are here to talk about a free program from Microsoft that will generate WMI calls in C#, VBScript, and VB.NET. It makes finding the WMI call that you want/need very easy and makes it even easier to test them.

The Microsoft blog, Ask the Performance Team has a very nice 2-minute overview of using this tool, which I highly suggest reading (that’s also where the above screenshot came from).

You can download the WMI Code Creator from Microsoft here.
